because of that, you know that if you add RS and ST, you get RT

so you can do (3x+1) and (.5x+3) = 18. then solve for x

then when you know x, you substitute it for the x's in RS and RT to calculate the lengths of them

not gonna lie... my mind is blank... i can't remember how to solve for x... I'm tired

ok. you add 3x to .5x which gets you 3.5x then you add 1 and 3 which gets 4, so you have 3.5x + 4 = 18. you subtract 4 from both sides, and you get 3.5x = 14. then you divide by 3.5 on both sides, which gets you x = 4

then you put the 4 in for the x in 3x+1 which gets you 13, and then put in 4 for the x in 1/2 x +3, which gets you 5. So RS = 13, ST = 5, and RT = 18.
