guys i need a lil help. i want to a start a project related to molecular biology or cell biology. in this i want less of wet lab work. can you suggest me some topics in which i could read a few research papers and then have my own conclusion? my ultimate aim is to write a research paper on that topic.

Well, molecular biology is a somewhat broad field, but it really coincides with genetics an biochemistry. But, you could do a paper on protein or DNA techniques, such as Western Blotting, Southern Blotting. A very popular and useful technique in Molecular Biology is PCR. A method used to amplify a specified number of genes to be used for study.

Ya ya...I have used that. But what kind of research would I do on these techniques?? Its already done.

Well, it's difficult for you to do your own research experiment without your own lab, for starters. Do you have lab access to conduct an experiment?

Yes I do have lab access but not a well equipped one. I can get all the basic things required for any mol cell proj.

You could do an analysis of the spatial and temporal RNA expression profile of the GPCR with real-time qPCR in Drosophila melanogaster?

this sounds very intersting. could you tell me something in detail....because i know all these terms in bits and pieces. but together i am totally blank.

Well I've been involved in a lab who have been studying the function of GPCR for AKH (adipokinetic hormone). AKH is if I remember correctly a functional analogue of the vertebrate hormone glucagon which you know is required for energy mobilization. It is seen that mutants for the AKH receptor store more fat and survive longer without food and tends not to have food seeking behavior when starved (damn flies). It have been confirmed that there must be an additional signalling pathway present. Some components of this second pathway have been identified, but so far the receptor is still unknown. The closest "relatives" to the AKH receptor is among others the cAMP receptor. This is kinda the background for the project.

ohhhh.....so this AKH is present in drosophila. u mean to say work on this other signaling pathway.

In essence yes :)

However you might need a huge theoretical study before ever starting the project. The biggest downside of this project.

i was gonna ask u the same thing. actually the thing is i have been given a year to do some project of my own in college. and this project would be graded. so i want to continue this proj further on (not just for the grades) and try concluding somthing from it. but the drawback is i have limited lab facility and the time of one year and obv thats not the only thing i am going to do in that year.

Hmmm. Isn't there some research groups at your faculty that might have a project to offer? It would usually be a minor part of a bigger problem.

i am trying that too but taking an initiative is preferred. if i get to work in a good research group then it is amazing but if not i have to start thinking something of my own.

I usually have the experience that many researchers like to take in students. :)
