their slopes are the opposite of one another

close they are negative reciprocal....the slope for the line given is -3 so the negative reciprocal is 1/3 that is the slope of the line you are looking for. Now you have the slope and a point. Use point slope formula to find the equation of the new line.

@RyanL. point slope formula is \[y-y _{1}=m(x-x _{1})\]

right?
anonymous

yes you are right in this case m=1/3 and the point (x1, y1) is (3,2) if you look closely you can see x1= 3 and y1=2 replace all of that inside the point slope formula and then simplify

@RyanL. I get y=1/3x-2/3

I can't tell if the x-intercept is 3 or -3

you should get y-2=1/3 ( x - 3) which then simplifies to y-2=1/3x - 1 add 2 to both sides and u get y=1/3x + 1 Now to get the x intercept y must be zero so now we have 0= 1/3 x + 1 isolate the x by subtracting 1 to both sides 0-1= 1/3 x + 1-1 -1= 1/3 x now we must get rid of 1/3 and we do this by multiply 3 to it so we must also multiply the left side with 3 now.. -1* 3= 1/3 * 3 x -3= x now we have -3 i think its confusing since I didnt write out 1/3 as a neat fractiong using the equation program.\[\frac{ 1 }{ 3 }\] but hopefully you can follow along.
