As long as the letters match you can combine them. They have to exactly match, though. Like, if you have 6xy and 5y, those dont combine because even though they both have y, they both must have xy. If you have 3x + 3x^2, they do not combine because even though they both have x, they dont match, one is squared. So given that they match, same letters, same powers, you can just combine them by adding and subtracting the numbers.
