Think about a simpler version of that:\[(a^2+b^2)^2\]Now let's see what would happen if you just distributed the exponent. You'd end up with:\[(a^2+b^2)^2=>a^4+b^4\] Now try expanding everything first:\[(a^2+b^2)^2=>(a^2+b^2)(a^2+b^2)=>a^4+2a^2b^2+b^4\]From that you should see that: \[a^4+2a^2b^2+b^4 \space \large{\neq} \space a^4+b^4\]Therefore, you can't just distribute the exponent :)
