Add/subtract the coefficients of the terms that have the same exponent. 9p^2 and 4p^2 are both p^2 terms so you can just subtract the coefficients to get 5p^2.

The answer sheet some how says that the answer is 5p^2-3p^3

Yeah, that's the same thing written differently. I ordered it with the highest degree first, but either way is fine.
