anonymous 3 years ago Why are there no Chinese students on Open Study?China has more than 1.3 Bn people and more developed compared to India but why I don't see any Chinese Users? PS I was suspended for asking this on chat, Still not sure why

1. AravindG

Majority of Openstudy users are from US, India and some other countries. We are making efforts on promoting the site. As for now there are some Chinese students here.

2. dmezzullo

Email contact@openstudy.com and they will answer why u were suspended

3. anonymous

Not to be offensive, but they are very controlling of what they can do on the internet there... BUT I am not sure. I am sure there can be some found on here.

4. ash2326

@thisSucks Students from all around the world are welcome, there is no restriction. Open Study can't promote itself around the world at the same time, team is trying to promote itself in US right now. However this doesn't stop users from promoting OS around the world, if you have any friends in china, you should invite them. Share about Open Study on Facebook, Google+ or any other social network.

I am just curious to understand how internet works in China. I heard that facebook and twitter are blocked in China. I wanted to know if there is similar ban for Openstudy. But statistically speaking probability of a random user being from China is higher compared to any other place.

6. anonymous

I felt that Chinese are not good at English and some moderator felt that this question was racist and they banned me. I think moderator should be answerable and shouldn't have this much power. Their poor judgement (according to me) caused a suspension

7. anonymous

It all depends on origin of the program or site. I am sure there are popular websites in the UK or central Europe that are virtually unheard of over seas. Or sites in the US that aren't popular abroad. Craig's List for example. It is all about exposure to grow a site, and OS is working on getting greater exposure daily.

8. ash2326

@thisSucks It's inexplicable, depends on the age group of users accessing Internet. If we go just by the no. of internet users, then on any website most of the traffic should come from China. But that's not the case One more thing, if you want to understand how internet works in China, you should Google that. You won't get answer for that here.

9. anonymous

@ash2326 I though this was a place to get answers to my questions?

10. ash2326

@thisSucks Yes it's stereotypical of you, do you really think that all Chinese have little knowledge of English. It's fathomable that you were suspended for this, as always if you feel that any mod has abused their power you should write a mail to abuse@openstudy.com

11. anonymous

There are a greater number of English speakers in China than there are in the United States. They have just as much knowledge of English as any other developed country. And, $$\color{red}{\text{No Offense}}$$, but some of the Indian users and others don't have the greatest command of the English language either.

12. anonymous

K I think I am pressing the buttons of moderators here. I should stop otherwise I will suspended again. There is no democracy and freedom of speech here I guess

13. terenzreignz

Even moderators have emotions :) It's best to stay within the 'objective' zone when describing nationalities and not veer towards the offensive, as quite a few moderators themselves are from India ^_^

14. ash2326

Yes, there is absolute freedom of speech as long as you abide to the code of conduct.

So please educate me the great learned Mod. Was my question racist...should I never ask demographic specific question?

17. anonymous

Like that, that was rude. Sarcasm isn't the best way to go. And when asking questions such as that, you need to learn to be more tactful about how you ask. Don't be racist, make stereotypical comments, and such. Keep it neutral.

18. anonymous

I just brought Indian Users here because it is a country with similar population as China. As far as I know Indians are good at English they take more pride in learning English then there native languages

19. ash2326

Yes, it was stereotypical. You could have paraphrased it, the same question could have been appropriate. Anyways let's just forget the past things, you are like any other user here and we welcome you.

20. anonymous

@austinL But people who use sarcasm are considered cool here.

21. ash2326

Sarcasm can be considered witty or it can even cross the line to hurt others. Let's be considerate of everyone here.

22. anonymous

I think I was @ash2326. I didn't want to hurt anyone. But I am still looking for the answer

23. terenzreignz

Forgive me for posting as a response to your question... another question, but I'm curious as to why you seek Chinese students... are you Chinese yourself, by any chance?

24. anonymous

there too good for us

25. terenzreignz

By the way, Callisto, a well known moderator on this site, is Chinese :)

26. anonymous

I am a citizen of free world. It made no sense to me that 1/7 population of the world has no representation on Open study which I felt was a global platform. I was just curious but it resulted in a suspension

27. terenzreignz

It could have been phrased as "Why are there no Chinese students on Openstudy?" Which is an objective way to put it and, as I see it, minimises any risk of offending people. Invoking a comparison wasn't really necessary, was it?

28. anonymous

I did the comparison so the stupid answer of developed nations didn't come. Or the answers like we are not popular in Asia. I see so many Indian users here. India and China have similar population and China has more internet penetration. I thought people here will have some insights and could share their wisdom

29. anonymous

But this suspension made me angry and made me automate the new account creation here. In anger I was on brisk of spamming but felt that it was ethically incorrect. Anyway If anyone is interested to learn automation of account creations let me know.

30. anonymous

Why would you post that?

31. anonymous

Is it against COC? I think there is flaw in the system. I did some useful work and I thought other might like it

32. anonymous

I am sure we have many students from China on OpenStudy. We are not able to always tell where a user is from but our users come from all over the world. Our goal here is to Globalize and help as many individuals as possible.

33. terenzreignz

^Spoken like a true global intern :D Congratz, by the way @Nikko ^_^

34. anonymous

Thank You @terenzreignz

35. terenzreignz

Fail... I tagged a complete stranger... another "nikko" bloody pretenders... can't hold a candle to the one and only SWAG :D ^_^

36. anonymous

Maybe there are many. At least they are shy to not come on the chat :)
