For the first question, the period of the restoration was made mostly of comedies that celebrated the antics of aristocracy. This influenced the author of the play. Restoration comedy is another word for "comedy of Manners," which means the dialogue is witty and sophisticated. As you can see in the play, the characters are higly educated and high class. Their lifestyle was different from ours. Those elements affects the situation in the play and this makes the readers find the play funny.

You could just put it like that. I don't think it should be shortened. :) For the second question, Jack uses the word a lot to describe the behaviors that seem strange or bizarre to him. Regarding the philosophy of absurdity, Wilde argues that serious things shouldn't be taken seriously and unimportant things should be taken seriously.

It's been a while since I read the play. Miss Prism is an unmarried tutor who likes to talk about marriage and to impress Chasuable. Chasuble is a doctor who flirts with her. Somewhere in the story, Chasuable uses silly figures of speach to be romantic. She does the same with metaphors.
