## Opcode 2 years ago $\textbf{Could the Barnum effect explain what I think are my prayers answered?}$ I have been studying psychology and I recently learned about the Barnum effect, I think it applies to some of what people call miracles, what do you think? Do you think the Barnum effect could be how your prayers are answered? What do you normally pray for? Have you experienced a miracle? (Explain if you answered yes.) Have you prayed or asked god for something very specific and gotten what you asked or prayed for? (Explain if you answered yes.)

1. anonymous

this is such a materialistic question.

2. Opcode

How so?

3. anonymous

It all goes back to where Lucifer and his angels were cast out of heaven.

4. Opcode

Um, do you know what I am talking about? I'm suggesting that what people care miracles are actually an result of the Barnum effect. Can you refute my claim with evidence?

5. anonymous

I gave a bum 5 dollars and I found 20 dollars is that a miracle whip c;

6. Opcode

Did he pray for the 20 dollars though?

7. anonymous

Yes you sewed 5 dollars and in return god gave you 20.

8. anonymous

lmfao, I think so @Opcode

9. anonymous

I didn't sew anything o-o

10. anonymous

you Reap what you sew

11. linda3
12. anonymous

mmkay, I don't understand your talk so....idk what you mean by sewing o-o

13. anonymous

you gave an offering and God reworded you

14. Opcode

Generally five dollars a homeless person wouldn't waste it on miracle whip though. With fiver dollars you can normally buy some food and an item of clothing. (If you are wise of-course.) Okay guys, please keep the question in its original topic. (You can find the format and answer the questions at the top.) @Orwell84 answer my questions.

15. anonymous

"reworded"

16. anonymous

o-o wut

17. anonymous

rewarded*

18. anonymous

Yeah opcode I never heard of the Barnum effect.

19. anonymous

20. anonymous

I would have heard about it by now.

21. Opcode

22. anonymous

Horoscopes?

23. linda3

When you pray for something and God answers your prayer it is a miracle. - there is no such thing as God only gives you limited amount of gifts, he loves you show much that he gave you his beloved son. He answers your prayers in away sometimes we don't seem to see it. Everyday you should recognize it's a miracle your still living. You can ask Him for things and if it's for the greater good he will give it to you. He loves you so much that he wants to make you happy.

24. anonymous

25. anonymous

Bar·num ef·fect nounPSYCHOLOGY 1. the tendency to accept certain information as true, such as character assessments or horoscopes, even when the information is so vague as to be worthless.

26. anonymous

There are no such thing as miracles

27. anonymous

Yes

28. anonymous

An answer to prayer is not a miracle it is favor from God, and if you pray for something and it doesn't happen you were ether living in sin or what you had prayed for is not part of Gods plan in your life or in the world.

29. linda3

I would tend to disagree with you Orwell.

30. anonymous

same

31. linda3

I believe in miracles

32. anonymous

Who Hated Jesus first?

33. anonymous

If their wasn't a such thing as miracle how do you think people get healed from cancer...

34. anonymous

miracles*

35. anonymous
36. linda3

we hated Jesus first.

37. anonymous

The world

38. Opcode

$\small \text{I pray to god for me to find a penny} \implies \text{I found a penny, so god granted me a miracle.}$ $\small \text{I pray to god for me to become rich over night} \implies \text{I don't maybe because I was too specific.}$ What people pray for is normally common and when it happens they think they have been granted a miracle. I think the Barnum effect maybe a logical explanation for why people think they have been given a miracle. Barnum effect generally states that people believe things that they are told because what they are told is a generally and applies to nearly all people. Since we pray for general things, maybe we are being fooled by the Barnum effect.

39. anonymous

Tf are you talking about "the world" go back to school dude

40. anonymous
41. Squirrels

I like to believe that there is someone looking after us. Performing miracles, guarding us, and such. Religion is something nice to believe in, especially how they describe "paradise". But then there are people like @Orwell84 who try to prove other religions wrong like its some sort of competition. This is what is wrong with religion now. Their stupid pride. Remember that religion is based on faith, which is what i believe you are looking for. God works in mysterious way, so it may take a while for you to find what you are looking for, but im positive you will get an answer. Patience is key <3

42. linda3

:') thats my boy

43. Opcode

Guys, my questions where: Do you think the Barnum effect could be how your prayers are answered? What do you normally pray for? Have you experienced a miracle? (Explain if you answered yes.) Have you prayed or asked god for something very specific and gotten what you asked or prayed for? (Explain if you answered yes.) Can anyone answer them?

44. anonymous

Sure

45. anonymous

People usually pray for someone in their family that's dying or sick

46. anonymous

Exactly that is the issue, people only pray to God when something in there life goes wrong.

47. anonymous

That's not true dude..

48. Squirrels

You know dang well what im trying to say orwell, stop being sarcasting.

49. anonymous

You can pray to live another day >.> Stahp acting like you know everything

50. Squirrels

Anyways @Opcode can you explain the Barnum effect to me? Or anyone?

51. anonymous

I was not at all being sarcastic, it was a serious statement.

52. anonymous

it wasn't a statement..it was an assumption

53. anonymous

It was absolutely not an assumption.

54. Squirrels

55. anonymous

it was... how do you know what people pray for

56. Opcode

@Squirrels Barnum effect isn't the direct question at had, but I think the general "same" thing is happing. Most prayers are asking for something simple and non-specific things. Could it be that what most people believe are miracles are simple generally things that they could do without prayer, but because they prayed they believe it is a miracle? Barnum effect applies to fortune telling, such you ask a fortune teller will it rain tomorrow since the question is general the fortune teller can pretend to use this knowledge of tomorrow's weather to "predict" your future.

57. anonymous

When was the last time you prayed to God just to thank him for your life?

58. Opcode

Why should I? I never asked to be born.

59. anonymous

Recently, Why do you care

60. anonymous

Because joy comes from thankfulness

61. anonymous

You need read the bible. Obviously you know nothing

62. Squirrels

But I agree with Orwell for once, when something wrong goes in your life. dont pray to god just for that reason. pray to him to thank him for your blessings. cause it just not right

63. anonymous

Would you thank your parents for bringing you into the world?

64. anonymous

Nope, because I didn't ask to be here

65. anonymous

So you are not grateful for your life?

66. anonymous

I didn't say I wasn't

67. Squirrels

68. anonymous

Than who would you thank?

69. Squirrels

70. anonymous

I don't have to answer that question

71. anonymous

No you don't

72. anonymous

It's obvious... everyone knows the answer to that

73. anonymous

74. anonymous

You tell me

75. Squirrels

lol wat

76. anonymous

God, you would thank God and he would bless you for your gratefulness.

77. anonymous

Yep, Exactly

78. anonymous

and the blessing would be joy

79. anonymous

Mmmhm

80. anonymous

81. linda3

82. anonymous

I didn't think you knew the answer.

83. anonymous

84. anonymous

Well.. That's making assumptions.

85. anonymous

I didn't assume

86. anonymous

87. Squirrels

Linda that was heart warming. <3 and Orwell stop being such a negative person. Being someone like that will get everyone to be against you such as now. Im assuming you dont care and thats fine, but later in life, if there is no one with you in the end, you'll know why. And as you read this you are probably thinking you dont need anyone but god. (just assuming) but i know god doesnt want you to treat someone like that

88. linda3

@Orwell84 then don't insult my religion. thank you.

89. anonymous

Exactly

90. anonymous

I am not at all a negative person.

91. anonymous

Yes you are

92. Squirrels

Right now you are being more negative than anyone one here

93. anonymous

Have we met somewhere before? Because I'm not sure I know any of you people.

94. anonymous

How am I being negative?

95. Squirrels

well you certainly pop out of no where in the chatpod. "talking to us"

96. anonymous

^^^

97. Squirrels

and when linda tried to tell a story about her miracle, you told her "I'm not reading your entire life story linda."

98. anonymous

No one wasn't talking to you...when someone talks about religion you join in

99. Squirrels

Agreed

100. anonymous

what?

101. anonymous

Only that subject though

102. anonymous

I need to be invited into a conversation on an internet chat board?

103. Squirrels

no but you jumped in our conversation, did you not?

104. anonymous

No, but when someone talk about religion you join in and talk negative... No one wants to be around your immaturity

105. anonymous

Yes and it was about homosexuality, it wasn't me that started the whole religious debate.

106. anonymous

You calling me immature in that condescending way, it's really immature of you.

107. Squirrels

but you still jumped in our conversation about religion, no?

108. anonymous

You're very immature

109. anonymous

110. anonymous

Linda was explaining something about her miracle then you rudely said "I'm not reading your intire life story, linda." She didn't say "Orwell read my life story" That's immature of you....

111. anonymous

entire*

112. linda3

@Orwell let me brighten you up on the many times you were being rudely negative towards me and my belief- Orwell84: Your entire doctrine was created by pagans who hated Christ. Orwell84: No linda, the Catholic church is where the people go to die. Orwell84: The Roman Catholic Church is deeply pagan. Orwell84: Linda you will be blind till the day you die. Orwell84: Vatican city is cult central and this isn't including hat you said about everyone else' religion. ~ if I may remind you that this is against the CoC of OpenStudy. Why don't you take the time to read it? - http://openstudy.com/code-of-conduct

113. anonymous

114. Squirrels

thank you linda, btw orwell that proves that you jumped in our conversation

115. anonymous

Exactly

116. anonymous

I shouldn't have to keep defending myself but there 5 different people all asking me questions at one time.

117. anonymous

No one isn't asking you questions, we're making statements on how you're acting immature and being rude.. Well you're not acting I think you are immature and rude

118. Squirrels

Ok, answer my question first orwell

119. Squirrels

Im sure you know my question already, i wont repeat myself

120. anonymous

"Linda you will be blind till the day you die." Was the only thing that I said which was negative, everything else was true. I expected someone to ask me about it in a rational manner.

121. anonymous

Not true,

122. anonymous

And you religion destroys people's souls.

123. Squirrels

How exactly do you know thats true?

124. Squirrels

proof?

125. anonymous

wow

126. anonymous

Because the Romans were pagans.

127. Squirrels

proof?

128. linda3

It isn't true! it's insulting my religion. And that there is very insulting towards me I would really appreciate it of you stop bashing on my religion.

129. linda3

The Catholic Church isn't Romans I thought you already said you knew that!

130. anonymous

He is full of lies

131. linda3

look I'm sorry but I'm done with this- @e.mccormick this isn't going out smoothly I think we can close this question- it is going off topic.

132. Squirrels

heres the thing orwell, instead of wasting my time, i going to say you have absolute no proof. i cant question your beliefs and neither can you. Because you have no idea if what you are saying is right. That is all based on faith. Faith is not proof. Even thought faith is something nice to have, you cannot question other peoples religion, only god.

133. Squirrels

Cant close it since no one has answered @Opcodes question :p

134. anonymous

After Christ went to the cross many people left paganism to follow the teachings of Christ. After years of murdering and enslaving Christians Emperor Constantine decided instead to merge traditional spiritual beliefs with the teaching of Christ.

135. anonymous

where is you're proof squirrels?

136. anonymous

There is only one religion, and one way to live.

137. anonymous

How many of you will allow you're doctor to put an RFID chip into your arm?

138. tHe_FiZiCx99

You're so wrong in so many ways. ^

139. anonymous

Everyone has there own personal opinion, I get that, but when it is all said and done there is only one way.

140. anonymous

And your spirit knows, the problem is many people would rather listen to there flesh.

141. linda3

142. tHe_FiZiCx99

Erm, nope.

143. anonymous

Why?

144. anonymous

Are you done being a moron yet?

145. anonymous

um ...

146. anonymous

I am immature.

147. anonymous

Agreed

148. Squirrels

You see orwell, thats what im saying, i dont have proof, you dont have proof, no one has proof, except god and his disciples. you cant say there is only one religion you cant say @linda3 religions is false because you honestly have no idea, no "PROOF". THIS IS ALL BASED ON FAITH, QUIT ACTING LIKE YOU KNOW FOR A FACT AS IF YOU SEEN THE CRUCIFIXION OF CHRIST, LIKE YOU KNOW HIM PERSONALLY, ya dig?

149. anonymous

true....very true

150. tHe_FiZiCx99

Op ;) I $$\ might$$ tell you a secwet later :>

151. anonymous

I do have proof it's only, I would have to wright a book. I can say all kinds of stuff but truthfully if you read the bible and especially open your eyes to how very bod the world is going down hill anyone could understand, and it's easy to just look.

152. anonymous

And there really is only one religion.

153. anonymous

Are you finished yet

154. Squirrels

Who is the author of the bible?

155. tHe_FiZiCx99

No there isn't. Proof being I don't believe in any.

156. anonymous

God

157. anonymous

Through man

158. Squirrels

ok, has anyone seen god in this world?

159. anonymous

Men of God.

160. anonymous

People that really served him according to the scripture.

161. Squirrels

or atleast is there any evidence

162. anonymous

No man has ever seen God.

163. Squirrels

exactly

164. linda3

do you mean to say Jesus' disciples?

165. Squirrels

its faith brother

166. anonymous

But that is not the point squirrels

167. Squirrels

168. Squirrels

169. anonymous

There are many thing you are not talking into account which you don't even know exist.

193. linda3

Okay that is insulting!!!! The pope did not worship Lucifer.

194. anonymous

His parents might be telling him the wrong info

195. anonymous

In a house of God do you really think the all might creator of all the universe would allow his people to molest a child?

196. anonymous

people have their own minds sicko

197. anonymous

All of the popes worshiped all kinds of Gods

198. Squirrels

where did you hear this orwell

199. anonymous
200. linda3

What in the world? Do you really think you are not a sinner? Aren't we all sinners? - and that is not true @Orwell84 you can't believe everything you find on the internet! gosh!!! your making me upset.

Just b/c one catholic sins does not mean The whole Catholic Church is bad.

207. Squirrels

she said dont believe everything on the internet as well

208. anonymous

If you are a follower of Christ you would rather cut out your own eyes than look lustfully at a child.

209. Squirrels

"Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

210. anonymous

If the spirit of the lord is in you your spirit is repulsed by even the thought of sin.

212. Squirrels

does that bring back any memories into your thick skull?

213. Squirrels

ok opcode, have a good day

214. anonymous

I never said I am sinless, my point was if you have the spirit of Jesus in you you are not going to molest a child that is as black a thought as the devil himself.

215. linda3

@orwell we are all not perfect it is satin that does this. And sin does not difined who we are nor neither does it defined My Catholic Church. Tell me @orwell when was the last time you've sinned? And after you answered that question to yourself- why did you not cut out your own eye? Now knowing that does that sin define you- no it doesn't.

216. Squirrels

that quote was directly to the pope orwell

217. linda3

thank you @Opcode

218. anonymous

219. Squirrels

^GOOD NIGHT !
