    The index of refraction, often \(n\), compares the speed of light in a vacuum (fastest thing ever) to the speed of light in that medium (like water). Specifically, \(n=\dfrac cv\) So an index of refraction will never be greater than 1. Moreover, you can find the velocity of light in that medium. By using some algebra moves, \(v=\dfrac cn\)
