    (z + 6)^2 = 5 Taking sq rt of both sides z + 6 =sqrt 5 \[z=-6 \pm \sqrt{5}\] using algebra.

    \[(z + 6)^{2}=5\]\[\sqrt{(z+6)^{2}}=\sqrt{5}\]\[z+6=\sqrt{5}\]Subtrac 6 from both sides of the equal sign.\[z=-6\pm \sqrt{5}\]The square root is both a + and - just as (-2)(-2) = 4 and (2)(2)= 4

I would hope that it would not be a guess, but that you followed it step by step and reached a conclusion.
