    it was an amphitheater specially designed for it and rebuilt when the fires of rome burned it down

    while chariots (as well as wild animals and mock sea fights - yes they flooded it for a reenactment) did occur within such, races were not.

    for the love of God people. the bloody Colosseum is where gladiators fought. the circus maximus was specifically built for chariot races it had no other function that that.
