What does it mean to vow on something? Like when someone says, I vow on something/someone that I will always do something?

A vow (Lat. votum, vow, promise; see vote) is a promise or oath.

I know, but usually when someone takes a vow, they say that they vow on something that they will do something. What does that mean?
