    There are certain minimum requirements, such as at joints, the angles must add up to 360 degrees. You can get information by googling "rules for tessellations" such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tessellation http://www.coolmath4kids.com/tesspag1.html and many others. Make sure you list your citations / references for a paper.
