anonymous one year ago can someone help me with this please(: In the equation │x│ = -a where a is a positive integer, what can be said about the solution? How can you modify the value of a so that you would have a solution to │x│ = -a of ±a?

1. anonymous

Ive done the first part but need help with the modify part.

2. anonymous

impossible as $\left| x \right|= a ~ positive~ quantity$

3. anonymous

that is what the first part is asking, ive got that. but now its asking o modify, which i dont know.

4. anonymous

this is what others have put │x│ = - (-a) X = - (-a) or x = + (-a) X = a or x = - a

5. anonymous

it can have solution only if $\left| x \right|=a,if~a~ is~ positive$ $\left| x \right|=-a ,if~a~is~negative.$

6. anonymous

so what others have put is incorrect?

7. anonymous

they have not made distinction between positive and negative quantity.

okay,thanks.
