    4d * 2d = 8d^2 and 4d * (-9) = -36d Do you understand where I'm coming from?

Yes you multiplied 4x2= and got 8d^2, and then you multiplied nine time 4 and got 36d because 9d x 4 = 36d. Im starting to get it!

When you have 2 b's multiplying each other, they have enough power to equal to an exponent. (b^2)
