Making Healthy Eating Choices For Today By: Alyssa King Healthy eating habits are important to have. There are many thoughts on how to do that today. I would like to share some of that information with you so that you may decide for yourself how to best eat healthily for you. In the end, we are ultimately the ones responsible for our eating habits, and the healthiness thereof. The Harvard School of public health has a very informative diagram entitled,”The Healthy Eating Plate”. In this diagram they give you a breakdown of the dietary proportions needed of each food group. Though in some places their thoughts stray from the “5 Food Group” teachings of past years, they have sound ideas and medical facts that support their evidence. The diagram tells us that as we are preparing our plate to eat we should include certain amounts of each food group to have a nutritionally balanced meal. According to this diagram, you should have half of your plate contain healthy veggies and fruits, not counting potatoes or fries. Unprocessed grains and healthy proteins such as fish and poultry should each average approximately ¼ of your plate each. It is stated that you only need 1-2 servings of dairy per day. They also state that you should use the healthful oils such as olive oil and canola oils in cooking instead of the oils higher in trans-fats. Lastly, according to this information,it is recommend that you drink no more than one glass of juice per day and drink mainly water, tea or coffee with as little sweetener as possible, thus avoiding the soda and energy/fitness drinks available today which contain both natural and artificial sweeteners that quickly affect your blood sugar levels. Many people have taken a page from our ancestors book and are adding edible flowers to their diet. Flowers can add much in the way of color and flavor as well as numerous and varied vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Many restaurants and home cooks use flower blossoms for visual appeal as well as flavor. When using edible flowers keep the dish simple, do not add too many flavors that over power the flowers taste. Always be sure the flowers you use are not picked from roadsides or bought from florists as they are likely to have chemicals added that could be harmful. Instead, grow them in your home garden or only purchase certified organic edible flowers. There are many choices for edible flowers and many varied flavors that those choices bring. Remove pistils and stamens from flowers before eating. Separate the flower petals from the rest of the flower just prior to use to keep them as fresh as possible. The most commonly known edible flowers are Violets, Calendula, Carnations, Clover, and Dandelions. Their flavors range from sweet to peppery to spicy. Whatever your choices for eating edible flowers always remember, eat flowers only when you are positive they are edible. If ever you are uncertain, consult a good reference book and, no flower is safe to eat unless it was grown organically. There are many foods most people think are healthy but are actually not healthy at all. Most people assume that turkey out of the deli is a healthier choice than a burger from a fast food restaurant. This is not necessarily true. Processed foods contain numerous preservatives and other chemicals and artificial sweeteners that are unhealthy. Much of the foods that are commonly eaten , hot dogs, lunch meats, frozen t.v. Dinners, all contain the same chemicals. The only way to be sure you do not eat foods containing such unhealthy things is to eat 100% organic . I hope I have given you information that will be helpful in making healthy diet and nutrition choices. At the very least I have given you some food for thought.
Thats actually pretty good
Thank you. I love to write. :)
Np and thats nice :) me too I'm writing a book :P
I kind of got a bit carried away and went well past the 3 paragraph minimum tho. lol
that is what my mom does in her spare time. I like to think I get it from her.
I think I covered all of the requirements pretty well. The only one I was not certain of was the header part
Headings through out the essay? Typo oops :P
(f) Include headings to help readers understand. this confuses me a bit.
Hmmm...Maybe your teacher wants like subheadings to group paragraphs under one topic?
I am not sure. Maybe if I change up the format of it. separate the 3 topics from each others paragraphs then that might make it closer to what she means. Not 100% sure though.
it simply reads as to complete an informative essay.
thank you for the medal :)
Yeah thats what I would say and np thanks too :)
grammar and punctuation is all correct tho right? so just switch up the format.
and you are very welcome as well :)
To me it looks okay yeah :)
@spacemountain Whatcha think on grammar?
thanks, now the fun of submitting. (and reformatting it too...lol)
Lol np good luck :P
Thanks. Good Luck with your books :)
Np and thanks too :)
That sounds good, but I would change "I would like to share some of that information with you so that you may decide for yourself how to best eat healthily for you." To: I would like to share some information explaining, on how having a healthier diet may better your overall health.
I can see that . I actually played with several different starts to it , including that but I was worried I was edging away from being an informative essay to it having my opinion in it . Teach was a beast about that all year...lol
I was sick and missed around 8 total weeks of school this year and got behind bc of it. the teachers were great though and I have been finishing all of my units for all subjects . they let me do just the unit tests and the semester exams. The lit class was the last for me to do. Mrs. Crooks was a hard task master, but I know it is only bc she knew I could do all of it if I put my mind to it. We just did the informative writing units last and I actually had to do 5 drafts of my last informative essay bc she said I was still leading in with my opinion. So I am probably over compensating , but this is for my final essay of the year and worth 20% of my grade so I am kind of scared of screwing it up :/
Oh wow :o
yeah. I have done an entire year worth of lit and math in 3 weeks. it is a wonder I have not went brain dead and started drooling ...lol
Lol hard worker
well, thik I am going to format and email. I hope I get 100%...lol... not used to having to do so much work n so little time. Been up by 6:30 am EST and work thru till midnight or later most nights. So glad tomorrow is the last day. All I have left are 3 easy science work samples and done for the summer. YAY!!!
Awesome, good luck amiga
Good luck, I think you'll get 100% :)
