FAN AND MEDAL A researcher places a radio advertisement offering $32 in exchange for participation in a short study. The researcher accepts the first nine people who respond to the advertisement. Which of the following statements is true about the sample? It is a valid sample because the first nine people were selected to participate. It is not a valid sample because it is not a random sample of the population. It is a valid sample because money was offered to participants. It is not a valid sample because it is only a short study.

does the whole population LISTEN to the radio? if so does the whole population have time ot respond to the advert? if so does the first nine make a reasonably 'random' sample - maybe the advert was broadcast at 5 a.m. - is everyone awake and ready to phone in at that time? does the sample therefore represent the whole population?

you have missed the point. it doesn't ask if the responders are unbiased it asks if they are a valid RANDOM sample of the WHOLE population see my questions above. this is not a valid sample

does the whole population LISTEN to the radio? answer NO therefore a sample drawn from ONLY radio listeners cannot be a representative sample of the population

that's because you are waiting for someone to give you the answer (it seems the other current posters do not really know so I suggest you ignore them) try looking at my questions in earlier post and thinking about what you have been told about random samples.
