By 3 and 6

- anonymous

But the 6 is a negative, so would it be -3 and -6?

- anonymous

yes

- nikato

yes. lets use the bigger one.
you what do you get if you factor out a 6?

- anonymous

answer is 6(x-4)

- anonymous

@asianswag thats not one of the answers :( and besides, I want to learn how to do this, not just get an answer

- anonymous

okay sorry

- anonymous

It's alright.

- anonymous

also is it -6x^2+18x-24?

- anonymous

the question?

- anonymous

Correct. Should I put the ^ symbol from now on?

- anonymous

yes

- nikato

ok?

- anonymous

yes that was my mistake

- anonymous

Alright, well this is getting confusing. I wanna focus on the help of one person so I'm gonna focus on nikato for now. Hope you guys understand

- anonymous

Okay, nikato

- anonymous

ok

- anonymous

okay goodluck

- anonymous

Thank you, and thanks for understanding

- nikato

ok.
now lets look at what's inside the paranthese, do you know how to factor that?

- anonymous

Yeah, give me a sec

- anonymous

I got -6x^2+18x-24

- anonymous

Sorry it took so long, had to find a pencil and paper

- nikato

wait, i think you did the oppsite.
i think you distributed instead of factoring.
you have something that looks like -6(x-__)(x+__)

- anonymous

Ooooh, alright. Haha, sorry I get confused by the two. How would I factor then?

- nikato

|dw:1433970053677:dw|
to factor this, you want to find two numbers when multiply gives you AC, but when you add them, you get B

- nikato

so in this case, you're looking for two numbers that multiply to give you 4, but when you add them, you'll get -3

- anonymous

OOOOOH -4 and 1?

- anonymous

That took me so long to get I feel so stupid right now XD

- nikato

yea. and because there's A=1. you dont have to worry about coefficients.
so the factored form of
x^2-3x+4= (x-4)(x+1)

- nikato

wait, is you problem right? are you sure it's not +24

- anonymous

Yup, I'm positive. -6x^2 +18 - 24

- nikato

oops. but i dont think you have factor it to (x-4)(x+1) because if you FOIL and check it you have x^2-3x-4., but you want +4 so this doesnt work
so the most you can factor up to is
-6(x^2 -3x +4)

- anonymous

Oh, okay. I see how you got that. Yeah, thats one of the answer choices. Thank you for your help! Since you spent 30 minutes trying to help me out I'll give you a medal AND fan!

- nikato

yea. sorry for wasting your time. should've done it ahead of time.
but you learned how to check it.

- anonymous

Nah its alright, you didn't waste any time. I just wanted to know how to do this, but the lesson wasn't very clear in my opinion. Thanks for the help :D
