A class of 12 girls and 14 boys is going to choose 3 students to represent them in student government. Allie suggested that the first 3 students to arrive in class the next day should be the representatives. Bobby suggested that each student roll 2 numbers cubes and the 3 students with the highest sum should be the representatives. Whose method would result in a fair sample that represents the class population, and why? A. Allie, because every student has an equal chance to arrive first in class the next day B. Allie, because students who arrive first in class are the most responsible C. Bobby, because every student has an equal chance to get a high sum D. Bobby, because students with the highest sum will be the most popular students

A is true, but unfair. Some students may have transportation problems. B is questionable. That MAY be an indicator. Are we looking for "responsible"? C is random - is this important? D is silly. This is how I go about it. I talk out each point and see how I feel about each one.

@tkhunny So it would be B?

How did you conclude that? "is questionable" somehow convinced you? Unfortunately, we are not given criteria for selection. If it needs to be RANDOM, "C" is the way to go. If we want to control it and pick "responsible", that may take more thought.

Talk about each one. How do YOU feel about them. If it were up to me, given no actual direction, I would have to side with "random". That would be "C".
