thik of f(x) like some rule that gives you value y, when you plug in some value x. Same for g(x). (f-g)(x) means for the same value of x, take the value that you get by rule g(x) and rest it from the value that you get by rule f(x). Hope this is enough

f(x) represents the rule, or operations you have to do to ontain value y from some value of x. For example: what would be the rule f(x) that gives you double of the number. It would be f(x)=2x. Right?
