How do you know if a redox reaction is taking place in a basic solution? Are you supposed to be able to tell from looking at the equation or will they tell you it's in a basic solution on a test?

They should say solve the following redox reaction under basic conditions, in which case you would use OH- to balance instead of using H+ in the acidic condition

Unless the problem states it, the other way you could determine is through electrochemical methods.
