The dark absorption lines in a star's spectrum are caused by the elements in the star's atmosphere absorbing some of the light emitted from the star. Since each element has a different pattern of absorption lines (they are like fingerprints), you can use the line to uniquely identify which elements are in the star's atmosphere.
