why society might initially reject a new scientific theory

    Not enough evidence to support the theory. Goes against what people have been taught since they were young. People are uncomfortable with change.

    corporations with short-term agendas, lobby the politicians

    The media will mis-understand and so mis-report what the theory "really" means. uncleR, I think "society" tries to ignore the corporate-bought politicians.
