we are doing this because we want to find k(p(x)) where p(x)=x-4

we will put first p(x)= x-4 in this equation k[p(x)] = k [x-4] then what k(x) =5x-8 what you will do you will just put (x-4) at the place of x in k(x) equation

5(x-4)-8 a(b+c)=ab+ac is the distributive property distribute the 5 to both terms inside the ( ) 5(x-4)=5(x)-5(4) so you have 5(x-4)-8 = 5(x)-5(4)-8
