Over the past ten years, the town's population doubled in size. The population is currently 12,000. What was the population ten years ago? Which of the following represents the given word problem if "P" represents the population ten years ago? 2(P + 10) = 12,000 2P = 12,000 P = 2(12,000) ?????

It says it has doubled over the past ten years. The population now is 12,000. So, you would divide 12,000 by 2 to get the population of 10 years ago.

No you're looking for the population 10 years ago, and it said it doubled in 10 years to 12000 giving your initial population to be 6000.

so its b because 2 times blank + 12000 and the blank (x) would be 6000

    \[2P = 12000 \implies P = \frac{ 12000 }{ 2 } = 6000\]
