If you cut a square along its diagonal , you form two triangles, each 45-45-90 triangles.

This shows you the formulas http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/algtrig/ATT2/Ltri45.htm the long side (hypotenuse) is sqr(2) * leg

They tell you The hypotenuse of the resulting triangles is 10 inches long. and ask What is the side? the formula says hypotenuse = sqr(2) * side replace hypotenuse with 10 10 = sqr(2) * side divide both sides by sqr(2) to get 10/sqr(2) = side people usually don't like dividing by square roots (a habit from the days before calculators) so multiply top and bottom by sqr(2) to get what ?
