42/100 = 0.42 Also you can tell, it is of 100 because the 2 in forty two, is in the hundredths place.

I think I should join in as well. First of all we need to convert from percentage to decimal so divide 42 by 100 or 42/100 =0.42 then we have this question 42 is 42% of what so we need to solve for x 42=0.42x now divide 0.42 by both sides and we should have x = 100
