    to be honest, you can just focus on the "y = x^2......." part :) If you know what your general parabola looks like, y = x^2 -7x + 18 will be the same in the way it opens but the vertex and intercepts will be different :) Here's a comparison: |dw:1436878515043:dw|

    i like to think of y = x^2 as a happy face :) and y = -x^2 as a sad face :( |dw:1436878729051:dw|

    @butterflydreamer can't we also think of that graph as a reflection as well ? x^2 is the parabola.. and -x^2 is a reflection of x^2 ?

    x^2 is POSITIVE ---> open upward -x^2 is NEGATIVE ----> open downward
