Hmm, a very interesting project going rn in my university is 3d printed rocket. First of it's kind. That'd be a good one. Audiophiles are big now. Creating new types of head phones are really taking off. Solar powered pump is trying to be developed for better irrigation in farms.
for anythign solared power, you'd need an EE help. it's a lot of circutry to fine tune your own design.
engine design would be my first go to if i was ME. there's a lot of room of patents with that.

Well, industrially, it could have use effects. Lower cost of flying to space. but yes, it'd be hard. um, make your own robot that picks up litter from the ground? That'd be something that gains a lot of attention in the eyes of professors.

Actually everything suggested may be beyound you research ability and can overwhelem, causing dispare. Suggest some basics as measuring frictions between different surfices, then how lubricants change it. How feedback is used in mechanical linkage and compare it to an electrical analog. What ever stay somewhat within your knowledge and do theoritical and physical experimentation to comfirm, this well prepare you to eventually do experimentation beyond your present knowledge expanding your tool set.
