Someone petitions the Supreme Court to review a case on appeal The lawyers submit briefs The justices vote to decide which cases to hear The Clerk schedules oral arguments The justices read all briefs and lower court documents The justices have their clerks research precedents and other information The justices listen to oral arguments The justices hold a case conference to discuss issues and take a vote One justice is assigned to write the official opinion of the Court The opinion is circulated for comments Other justices write concurring or dissenting opinions (optional) The decision is released to the parties and the general public
