## anonymous one year ago Challenge! Ready? Wayne used the diagram to compute the distance from Ferris, to Dunlap, to Butte. How much shorter is the distance directly from Ferris to Butte than the distance Wayne found? http://assets.openstudy.com/updates/attachments/5123f916e4b086b98ebd7a6e-frogs29-1361312127145-4619582162011123835pm791438685.png

anyone?

Look at the diagram, what is the distance between Ferris and Butte that is computed by Wayne ?

Haha okay, from the diagram it is clear that the distance between Ferris and Bute as computed by Wayne is $$15+20 = 35\tag{1}$$

6. ganeshie8

If we cut straight across the diagonal, the distance can be computed by using pythagoras theorem : |dw:1437616087487:dw| $\sqrt{15^2+20^2} = 25\tag{2}$

7. ganeshie8

difference is $$35-25 = 10$$, so the direct distance is $$10$$ miles shorter compared to the distance computed by Wayne.

? Um what did I do wrong?

Why did you reask the question?
