From gathering research and looking at my own milk carton, a sell by and used by date is present on it. But if I had to choose one or the other my answer would be a sell by date.

There is an expiration date but that is not what is stated on the actual carton. The expiration date is called "Best if used by" but not every milk carton has that. Every milk carton does in fact have sell by because of store purposes @Rushwr
But then again in my country they say that expiry date is essential to be on a milk packet !
Where is your country because in America certain milk cartons do not have expiration date but in in fact does have a sell by date.
