3x^3 is the same as 3x*x^2 3x^2 is the same as 3x*x -18x is the same as 3x*(-6) so we see the common factor is ?

well your choices basically tell you the common factor is 3x but that leaves the x^2+x-6 to factor

    3x(x^2 - x -6) Then, factor the trinomial into a product of two binomials. 3x(x -3)(x+2)

well just a little bit you chose the number -3 and 2 but -3+2=-1 which isn't 1 you almost got it; just switch the negative around

I'm still going to give @Cgsmith a medal because he did show how to factor x^2-x-6 which is (x-3)(x+2)
