    because see it like this ( i can always be wrong in my thinking) take x axis as the trips to the hills and y axis as the buckets of water but they already have 3 buckets so you don't start in the origin but at point 3 at the y axis

    and you will see that in your equation also that there will be something like y=mx+3 and the 3 indicates that you go 3 levels up the y -axis
