Tin reacts with nitric acid according to the following equation. What substance is the reducing agent? Sn(s) + 4HNO3(aq) → SnO2(s) + 4NO2(g) + 2H2O(g)

    According to the reaction you have to look for the oxidation states of all the elements in the reactants as well as in the products. Then look for the element the has a more positive oxidation state in the products than in the reactants, that one is the reducing agent.
