The septum is the membrane dividing the right and left chambers of the heart. the right auricle and right ventricle contain de-oxygenated blood and the left auricle and left ventricle contain oxygenated oxygenated blood. If the septum is ruptured the oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood mix and causes Methemoglobinemia also known as the "Blue Baby Syndrome". this reduces the capacity of the blood to carry oxygen and can cause death. It can also destabilize the blood pressure and cause cardiac failure.
