    If you start facing West, then you need to turn 41 degrees towards South to face the red arrow

    That is west of north. The line is in the quadrant that is defined by North and West, therefore those are the two relevant direction. They give the angle as 45 degrees from north, therefore it is 45 degrees west of north. is this right?
