Shawna and Kai both work at the same pet store. On Monday, Shawna counts 52 birds and cats in the store. For the same animals, Kai counts 138 legs. How many birds and cats are in the pet store?

    birds have 2 legs and cats have 4 x is the number of each animal cats =4x birds =2(138-4x) equation should be 4x+2*(138-4x)=138 first step is to distribute the 2! good luck!
