ax^2 + bx + c discriminant is b^2 - 4ac x^2 - 2x + 3 discriminant = (-2)^2 - 4*1*3 = 4 - 12 = -8 because the discriminant is negative we can say that there are no factors x^2 - 2x + 3 is prime
