So for the base of the triangle we can simply do $b = 22-12 = 10$ as we know the side of the square is 12, and all the sides of the square are the same.

Yeah, so it's not a square...we can use the tan ratio $\tan \theta = \frac{ opp }{ adj } \implies \tan \theta* adj = opp \implies \tan(45)*10 = opp = 10$
