Rhythm guitarist hold the song together because they keep the steady musical tones of the song. They are also responsible for things like the timing of the songs they know all the basic techniques and are able to switch chords properly. Lead guitarist, however, take over single notes and also some melodies, they incorporate the unique sounds of the songs and can do solos as well. While they do hold the uniqueness of the songs, they still need to know the basics that rhythm guitarist have to know.
