    the last step was 9*4 + 2 carried form last step = 38 next step is 9*5 + 3 carried = 48

    starting from the right side of the number - thats is 4, 9 times 4 = 36 and you write 6 under the 4. You carry the 3 (i have written the 3 above the next number to be multiplied which is 2). 9 * 2 = 18 - now you add the 3 carried from previous multipl;ication to 18 to make 21. Next you write the 1 (from the 21) under the 2 and carry 2 to the next step. Repeat this step to finish it off.
