## anonymous one year ago You are helping your dad build a dog house for your dog. You tell him that it would be easy to build a dog house in the shape of a tent. The slanted sides are 13 feet long and the bottom of the house is 24 feet across. You draw him the following illustration to help him find the height of the dog house. What do you tell him the height of the dog house is? http://static.k12.com/eli/bb/817/-1/0/2_36869_44974/-1/5c45df68fdad740c9f94d22ea5f92dd60c7a03f7/media/47fa9ba6bdaca49ec526166ba519bc2ef11b7502/mediaasset_651820_1.jpg 10 ft 5 ft 25 ft 4.5 ft

Use Pythagorean theorem to solve the problem. a = ? b = half of 24 c = 13 a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Do you still need help?

=12 ?? yeah i dont understand

Okay, so a equals the missing leg which is the height of the tent. Just plug in b and c. b = 12 and c = 13 into the Pythagorean theorem. Once you receive the solution to b^2 and c^2, subtract b^2 from c^2. That will be the a^2. Square root a^2 to receive the height of the dog house.

|dw:1438828811796:dw| Find x using Pythagorean Theorem. $x=\sqrt{13^2-12^2}$

6. anonymous

is it 10 ft

7. anonymous

What is 169-144?

8. anonymous

25

9. anonymous

What is$\sqrt{25}$?

10. anonymous

5

11. anonymous

Then 5 is the height of the tent. :)

12. anonymous

or the height of the doghouse. :D
