    I might be easier to make it into a improper fraction, solve it, then convert it back to a mixed fraction.

    Multiply the whole number by the denominator, and add the numerator.

    Then that is the numerator to your improper fraction...and the denominator to the original fraction is the denominator to your new improper fraction.
