College athletes are considered to be amateurs but does this mean they should not get paid? All college athletes should get paid for their hard work, dedication, and sacrifices. Sacrifices made due to mandatory practices, games, and time spent to keep their grade point in the mandatory range. They do not have time to get a job and earn money to pay for things such as food and clothing. The college makes money from spectators watching the game, and the athlete should receive a pay to cover expenses outside of tuition. Indeed college athlete are students first and athletes second. But, the average college athletes will attend about 40 hour a week at practice commitments. But spend less than 15 hours on their student commitments. In fact college athletes are not even to attend paper classes as long as a final paper is submitted at the end of the year. If an athlete attends said classes they must maintain a minimum of a 1.8 gpa. When asked why college athletes do not get paid a NCAA board member said the student athletes are amateurs and they are amateurs because they do not get paid. The college athlete must sign a contract agreeing to receiving no further benefits than the ones provided and they can be cut from the team and scholarship program for any given reason or time. Some players have even been reported of selling drugs just to pay for necessities such as food and rent. Throughout these 3 to 4 years as a college athlete they risk their mental and physical health, jail time, as well as their name, being cut from the team or scholarship program, and the ability to get a paying job. Above all being provided with free schooling is considered priceless. Even though tuition is an average of 35 hundred dollars a year. A school makes over 12 billion dollars a year off the revenue for college sports. For football the school makes $1.6 billion off of ticket sales, $1.5 billion off of donations, $1.2 billion off of tv contracts, and $0.5 billion of od sponsorships. The coaches get paid handsomely to keep the players in check. While the players tuition is paid for with an average amount of $30,000. Players are suppose to use the experiences they receive in college sports for when they become professional and to love to play the game. How can they love to play the game when they are struggling with hunger, stress, fatigue, and overall health? People believe that getting a scholarship would be enough payment for college athletes. With no job, they cannot expect to provide the money for necessities such as: food and housing. A college student receives more than 15 hours of academic work, and almost 40 hours of sports training a week. The reason behind it is because college sports require hours of hard work and dedication, this could affect the student's grades. College athletes should be paid for their participation in sports.
