In spite of various occupying cultures, Egypt has retained its name and a nationality. The Mayan empire was crumbling internally when Cortes began his conquests. The Spaniards made slaves of the natives, and the Jesuit priests commanded that they burn their tree-bark books in order to save their souls. This began a pattern of subjugation for the Mayan people. In both cultures, however, artifacts, traditional dress and crafts as well as games and foods retain the flavor of their heritage.
