How do you find out what's in a box without opening it?

My teacher told us to find some ways to finding what's in it if we were only allowed to use the science equipment provided such as a scale, balance beam, ruler, etc.

it's definitely a cat and it is either alive or dead but until you open the box, it is both alive and dead no kidding. :-( @Michele_Laino @Astrophysics

Why would it be a cat? This is my astronomy class by the way. I couldn't find an astronomy group on here so I went to physics.

i was of course joking, and my jokes are never funny it's a very open ended question and the answer will be very subjective. i would look at the postage and maybe recognise as the book i ordered on Amazon. or i might see the postcode of my home town and recognise my friends handwriting. weighing it will not differentiate between it containing a bunch of books, or a dead cat. measuring it will not achieve that either. i thought, when i made my "joke" that the question itself was maybe a pun. x-ray, something that allows you to see through matter, that's when it gets good.

personal opinion: your science teacher needs to stop torturing you and teach you some science

Schrodinger's Cat is a physics "joke" [qv not funny] or at least Schrodinger genuinely intended it as such it was then taken seriously by some other eggheads that doesn't help you though?!?! maybe your teacher is being very cunning and teaching you that you can't ever say what is inside the box until you open it ;-) that would get my vote
