How do you know if the transverse axis is parallel to the x-axis or parallel to the y-axis? Im really confused!?

    Can someone help clear something up for me? Im really confused and I've been up all night trying to understand it, but I just cant wrap my head around it.. How do you know if the transverse axis of a hyperbola is parallel to the x-axis or parallel to the y-axis? Im really confused...do you just look at its standard form equation?
