Not sure in what context you want the descriptions, but at the source the voltage is "stepped-up" to a very high voltage for transmission to a sub-station where the voltage is stepped down to a lower voltage like 7,600 volts, transmitted to a residential transformer where the voltage is further stepped down where the voltage is now 240 voltage AC with a neutral providing 120 volts AC from each leg of the 240 VAC so you can now have two circuits of 120 VAC and a 240 VAC for electric dryer, furnace etc.
